Poke -
(Hawaiian) One of the classics of Hawaiian cuisine (which is darned hard to find in NYC.) Cubed raw fish/tuna, seasoned with sea salt, limu seaweed, onions and tomato. A wonderful dish with a fresh, slightly lemony tang - mingled with tons of great raw fish taste. (Can you tell that I love sashimi?) Those who enjoy sushi, ceviche or Korean Hwe Du Bop will love this dish as well. 3.75 stars. Would I try again? YES. Sushi-yummy licious. Where I found it: Hakata Grill. Also available at Waikiki Wally's in Alphabet City. |

Quark - German A very soft, extremely smooth cheese - I thought it'd be more like cottage cheese, but this stuff is so spreadable, it just begs for a bagel. Would I try again? Yes, although I'm not rushing out for it. Where I found it: Grand Central Market (in Grand Central Station) |

Vegemite/Marmite The infamous vegemite/marmite - I only knew of this stuff through the Africa song. You know, Land of Downunder? Well, turns out that alot of Europe has a love/hate relationship with this stuff - it's a vegetable extract, the remainder of brewer's yeast. The Australian version is Vegemite, the British type is Marmite. There's plenty of argument as to which is better, with ardent fans on both sides. As an American who's tried both, I think Vegemite is better. Marmite is runnier, with a stronger saltier taste that's a bit too much. Gimme Vegemite! 'Course, I actually lived in Australia as a toddler, but as far as I know, I never tried it - so it's not a country related bias on my part. It's got alot of good things: Thiamin, Niacin, Riboflavin, and Folate. It's a salty as hell - and is a real acquired taste. First time I tried it, it was incredibly nasty. And it sat in my refrigerator for ages (I hate to throw anything out.) But eventually I tried it again (it's often eaten as a spread on toast with butter). And bit by bit, I've grown to like it. Crave it, actually. God, the other day I actually had a burning yen for it on a whole wheat pita. So - you really have to try it. But you have to give it several attempts before you develop a taste for it. (I wonder if there's a physical addiction to it at all - seriously?!?) 3.9 stars! Would I try again? Interestingly enough, yes. Where I found it: Whole Foods |
