I love Asian food.
Exotic, authentic Asian food.

No standard takout food for me - the stranger, the better.  I've recently discovered that there's a whole world of Asian cuisine (and other nationalities) that I know nothing about - and it fascinates me.  Lucky for me, I'm not squeamish.  As a matter of fact, I'd be a prime contestant for Fear Factor.  I've eaten bugs as part of authentic dishes (to my husband's horror.)
And as a New Yorker, I'm blessed to have Chinatown only a subway ride away.

At the beginning of my journey, I researched the web.   I found a few good humor "gross-out" sites (like Crazy Asian Drinks), but I failed to find the equivalent of a "DefinitiveWesterner's Guide to Asian Food."   Hence, this site.  Here you will find a list of foods that I've tried.  Each entry will have a picture, description and my honest (balanced?) opinion of the experience*.

This site should be taken for what it is: a journal sharing my adventures in food, and my growing knowledge and experience in the world of Asian Cuisine.    In reading through these pages, you will also find something of a bias towards desserts.
Why?  Because I like 'em.
Also, be aware that I'll go far afield of Chinatown (and out of Asia altogether), if it gets me to new and different munchies!
(Recently, for instance, I've been getting my kicks with Greek/Turkish Vegetarian  nibbles.)

Do you have a food that you think should be on this list, a link to a  reference page, or a great photo?
This site is far from complete - it's a shared chronicle of my culinary experiences, and I want it to grow.
So email me!

And remember - life's too short to eat familiar food!

Eats on other shores:
So, what is a Gaijin Girl to do when she's walking down the street,
and sees a really neat new deli or restaurant - but it's not Asian?
Okay - I can't help myself.  So, here's the non-Asian section of exotic dining (including US items),
which I'm sure will grow in time.

Americana - NYC Style: The Little Survey

The 'top' ten list of eats, with coming attractions

Map of Chinatown - A map of NYC Chinatown, with a breakdown by street.   In my opinion, the best way to explore Chinatown is to grab a map, and wander without a specific goal.  It's crucial to approach Chinatown with a sense of spontaneity and adventure.  Go through stores and streets as the urge takes you - you'll be glad you did!
A quick sketch to get your bearings: In general, Chinatown is the area within the following borders -
Lafayette (West), Allen (East) Delancy (North) and East Broadway (South)
Now - go and explore!

Map of Asia (from World Sites Atlas) - Hey, if you're going to eat the food, you should know where the country is!

* For a more "unbalanced" look at things, I'll also include my husband's comments where applicable - a segment I'm calling "Phil says."

Also, look for the rare but important "4 Stars" rating, which means I'd go out of my way to try that item/food again.  As the queen of stingy, from me, that means quite a bit!  Anything over 3 stars means that it's something you should definitely try.
