Gua Bao - Taiwan a.k.a. a Lanjiaburger(?) A pork patty, topped with various seasonings inserted into the softest, smoothest steamed white bun I've ever tasted. Would I try again? Yes! The steamed bun is especially heavenly! Where I found it: At a Taiwanese American Heritage Festival at Union Square. |

Meatball
(Taiwanese) - Taiwan Not quite sure what the traditional name of this is, but they said it's commonly called a meatball. It's cooked bits of pork and veggies (bamboo shoots?), encased in a glutinous, floppy shell. (I'm thinking mung bean jelly, but I'm not sure.) Wasn't bad, definitely required a fork to eat - but wasn't anything to dance about. Kind of plain, actually. Would I try again? No. Where I found it: At a Taiwanese American Heritage Festival at Union Square. |

Stinky Tofu
(chodofu) - Tiawanese I'm starting to sense a trend. I read allllll about how something is horrible, terrible, icky nasty and intolerable - like natto, and durian. I run to try it - and - what's the big deal? Same with stinky tofu. It's suppose to be gross out the max. Fermented tofu - allegedly smelly and uneatable. Mine required a trip out to Flushing from the Bronx, was fried and prepared on a bed of lettuce. A *little* bit of palatable aroma to it, and then it was chewy and mostly bland (a touch of spice, that's it.) I'm not believing the critics ever again. They want gross? I'll show them a thousand year old egg. Now THAT's gross. (Course, I hope I got the genuine article - there was a bit of a language barrier at the time...!) Would I try again? No - it was no great whoop, either way. Where I found it: Canaan |
