Italian Munchies - other than the obvious stuff like pizza, anyway....

Calzone - (Italian)
Also known as a stuffed pizza.  A pizza dough turnover, filled with a huge volume of ooey, gooey mozzarella cheese and ricotta.  Very tasty - though if you see one, you'll know exactly why Tony Soprano got so fat...  A decent 3.5 stars.

Would I try again?  Sure (if only I could get it with a soy cheese interior...!)

Where I found it: Nicky's

Panini - (Italian)
A toasted sandwich, made from a particular type of  Italian bread called ciabatti.  The sandwich gets loaded down with a number of deli accoutrements, such as turkey and cheddar, and then smooshed flat in a grill.  For some reason, pressing the sandwich definitely improves the taste!  It's a nice change from your everyday Joe Schmoe deli sandwich.

Would I try again?  Sure.

Where I found it: A diner in Yonkers - paninis are everywhere.

Stromboli - (Italian)
Another Italian turnover, made from pizza dough.  Flatter than calzones, strombolis are generally filled only with mozzarella cheese (along with a number of optional extras, such as ham, pepperoni, etc.)  Yummy stuff, and certainly more filling than pizza.

Would I try again?  Nah - it's hard to get one without meat (which is important to me.)  I'd rather get my (somewhat less calorie-filled) Italian jones from a pizza slice, thank you very much!  (But you should try one for yourself.)

Where I found it: Nicky's

The Grand List:
Nicky's (the best darned Italian joint in the Bronx!  Sorry Arthur Ave...)
