| Forums and Personal Websites: |
| A Guy in New York The Readers Digest of Food Blogs (and I mean that in a good way.) A distillation of reviews from all the salient (and salivatory) NYC food blogs and websites, along with a lot of other NYC links. Don't miss checking out the week in reviews, for snibbets of restaurant reviews across all five boroughs... |
| Asiafood.org A good primer/compendium of the different ethnic cuisines - also has a NYC based member group, with perks. |
| Bad Candy In the vein of Crazy Asian drinks (see below) - a compendium of freaky, bizarre, and generally hysterical bad candy concepts (at least from an American viewpoint.) They tend to focus on Mexican stuff. But still! |
| Blog Soop Salli Vates, A Guy in New York, EGullet, Chowhound...oh yes, and Gaijin Girl. The world of NYC food blogs is ever growing, making it rather hard to keep track of 'em all. Besides - it would be nice to be able to compare blog reviews for a single restaurant side by side, instead of trekking all over the net for information. Wish no more, for now there's Blog Soop - a central information hub, providing one-stop shopping for most of your favorite food porn sites. But hey - don't forget to visit GG in person...we'd miss you terribly! |
Crazy Asian Drinks Okay, so the general viewpoint of this website is how gross all the drinks are - an opinion that I can't agree with. But it's still humorous (I like the Pikachu riffs), and gives an idea of what's out there. It's also got great website design. Fun for a quick look... |
| Doms Culture Foods
of Asia One man's compendium of the different fermented foods of Asia. A good esoteric primer - he really knows his stuff. |
| Eating
in Translation Yet another NYC-based food b-log, documenting the wonderous culinary cacaphonies which are available in our fine city. Gawd, do we really need another one? :)))) |
| eGullet
A forum dedicated to talking about food. A great group of informed people, really friendly. Forum sections include Asian Food, Adventures in Eating (Off the Beaten Track), and many others. |
| Fat
Guy Seoul Blog This gentlemen lives and works in Seoul, Korea, and documents his dining adventures with some really wonderful photos. And since he's actually in Korea, it's definitely authentic... 6/24/05 - Sad news - Fat Guy is moving, and this blog will eventually be closed. Read it while you still can. |
| Goodies
First (now known as Project Me) A fellow female stalker of the tasty and different in NYC - check out the all-you-can-eat dining diary, for a list of the many restaurants and eateries to explore (she's covered more territory than me!) |
| Japanese
Ice Cream A humorous listing of the different ice cream flavors available in Japan. So far, I've only tried Durian, and liked it. But I'm looking forward to all the other flavors, even squid! |
| Japanese
Pizza Page A compendium of pizza, Japanese style. While the author reacts to the toppings with horror, I find them fascinating, and wish that they were available in NYC (haven't seen anything like 'em, but I'm dying to try squid ink pizza!) Informative, and amusing. |
| Mid-town
lunch Just what it implies - a compendium of mid-town spots for lunch, for all of us NYC working stiffs. Not bad - a decent source of reviews. |
| Supervegan
The place to go - when you're both a vegan and a foodie. They've got their own pages o' reviews, and decent snippets of vegan news. Just an all-around decent website - well designed, well written...well, what more can I say? |
| Sali
Vates Blog Another food obsessed NYCer, with an informative website. God, where do we all come from? And why are so many of us female...??? Never mind, don't answer that. |
| Steve,
don't eat it! A guy after my own heart - basically, this average joe's weblog of stuff he ate...and probably shouldn't have. Okay, so I'm not into the animal sourced freak food anymore...but there's still plenty of icky stuff I'm willing to snarf - such as natto, and stinky tofu, and well, natto again... But Steve, my hat's off to you. |
| Vegan
Friendly A vegan couple's food blog - hitting alot of the good places (from asian spots like Lan to Vegetarian's Paradise, Sacred Chow or Blossom.) The writing is a joy to read - and they seem like such nice people...! (Even if they aren't harsh enough on Zen Palate or Gobo.) |
Weird Foods Page - A list where people submit their favorite weird foods from around the world. A short, fun compendium of some of the stuff that's out there, such as baby mice wine (China), and other such delicacies. No, you don't want to know.... |
Whats4Eats.com Another decent primer page, broken down by ethnicity. One really nice feature: each category is illustrated with a map of the country and surrounding area. |
| Reference
Pages: |
Amazon.com Yes, Amazon.com . A little known fact is that they have a menu web search. It's dependent on people submitting the menus, so its not comprehensive. But it's a great starting point if you're looking for that rare and elusive dish in your local area (like baby mice wine...) |
| Bridge and Tunnel Club Not sure who puts this out, but a great source for those all-important menus not found on menupages.com. A few highlights of the valuable information found at this site? Menus for Upi Jaya, and Zabb Thai...need I say more? (To use: click on the borough you desire, then select the "feed" icon, over on the right hand side of the page...) (Warning, though: some of the featured menus--such as Taprobane--are long gone...) |
| Cia
Factbook Want to know more about the country you're exploring? Check out this comprehensive site. |
| Citysearch.com Ok, you most assuredly already know about this one - it's practically the internet's yellow pages. Still, it should be here. |
| Happy
Cow Another good vegetarian/vegan restaurant search engine. Just FYI... |
| Menupages.com Want to know if the restaurant you have your eye on has sea cucumber? When the Amazon.com menu page fails you, give this a try. Good only for NYC, I believe. But it's helped me out of a few spots... |
| Menupix Tired of Menupages? Try out Menupix - another menu reference page (one positive: they had a menu for Skyway Malaysian on Allen Street, which menupages didn't...!) |
| Super
Vegan.com A great, comprehensive listing of all the veg-friendly restaurants in NYC - rated by V-Level (for instance, vegetarian, vegan, almost vegan, etc.) 3.9 stars! Great job, guys! |
| The Village Voice Want to know where to find Corsican food in NYC? Check out the Village Voice. Granted, the only two things I read the Voice for anymore are restaurant reviews and Dan Savage, but that's something. And it's got a great list of country variations (the food section, that is...not Savage Love!) |
| Wikipedia You've probably stumbled across this in your searches - it's got great hyperlinks between topics and best of all? It's user edited! A great example of how the internet can bring knowledge and power to the common guy, and enlist him (or her) in the process!!! |
| How
to get there via subway: |
| Hop
Stop The subway navigation system used by menupages (found at the bottom of restaurant entries - offering directions to and from each location.) Really nifty - and I daresay, better than straphangers...! |
| MTA Subway Map A clickable reference of the subway lines, what transfers where, and whether it's local or whatnot. Very useful. |
| NY
Subway Finder Type in the address, and you get a listing of the closest subways. A great tool. |
| Straphangers Campaign More interactive than the version above. Type in the address, and you'll get the applicable subway lines. Make sure to choose the "identify stations" options. |
| Yahoo Maps Yet another great way to pinpoint cross streets, driving directions (or zip codes, if you need it for the other search engines listed above.) |
| Cooking (vegan): |
| Compassion Over Killing - an absolutely great website, with tons of easy recipes for the beginner cook (trust me - I'm an absolute clutz in the kitchen, and all the recipes I've tried from here have still come out absolutely yummy!) |
| Vegan
Inspiration: |
| Think vegans can't
be strong? As someone who's been around the gym quite a few
times--both with hardcore jujitsu and just lifting really heavy metal
objects--I was worried that going vegan would be the end of my muscle
building goals. Fortunately, I've run across a few *really*
inspirational guys on the web, all quite impressive to look at...and
all vegan. Check out these guys, and you'll never think of vegans
as
stereotypical hippie wimps ever again. (Now, if only I could find
some
women vegans who are equally cool): |
| Kenneth Williams |
| Jim Morris (the
guy's 72, believe it or not!) |
| Mike
Mahler - Vegan...and into
kettlebells. Wow, am I impressed with this guy...! |
