Kalu Dodol A small, brown square made from coconut milk, jaggery (palm sugar) - dotted with bits of cashews. Stiff and gelatinous, this confection wasn't particularly sweet or rich. For me, this came as a disappointment after having rich Indian desserts such as Gulab Jamon and Halava...! Would I try again? No. Where I found it: Sigiri |

Peni (Yogurt and Treacle) Curd (traditionally buffalo), topped with palm syrup. It's nice - the sour tartness of plain yogurt, with a type of honey and water poured over the top. And at least the yogurt is pretty healthy.... Would I try again? Yes, but no rush. Where I found it: New Sunshine |

Pol-Toffee A colorful, pink confectionary made from sugar and coconut. This one was nice - though already a familiar taste for anyone who knows the breadth of southeast asian cuisine.... Would I try again? No rush, but someday. Where I found it: Sigiri |

Thalaguli Wrapped up in taffy paper - a small, cylindrical chew covered in sesame seeds. Mildly sweet, but nothing to write home about. (Sorry, Sigiri! I love your stuff, but the desserts aren't the highlight. The mango cordial--on the other hand....serious yum...) Would I try again? No. Where I found it: Sigiri |

Walithlapa I found nothing on this in Yahoo or Google, just a spelling from the lady at New Sunshine. These are sweets that look like Rice Krispy Squares - same color, but they're slightly heavier and moister, with chewy little nuggets of something in them interspersed throughout. At $1.00 a pop, I don't regret the taste. Would I try again? Yes, but I'm not in hurry. Where I found it: New Sunshine |

Wattalapam Originally Malaysian in origin (so I read), Wattalapam is a sweet that's got a pumpkin pie type texture - a mixture of coconut milk, palm sugar, eggs, cloves and nutmeg. Yummy, although not over the top different. Would I try again? No, it's not exotic enough for me. Where I found it: New Sunshine |
