East European (Russian, Ukrainian and Ethnic Jewish)

Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel)
A dessert pastry with sweet filling - wrapped inside a rather elastic, stretchy dough.  Though Apple Strudel is one of the most popular, other fillings also are used...such as sour cherry, quark cheese...and even spinach.  The sweet ones make for a decent dessert...though its nothing particularly exotic.

Would I try again? Theoretically, yes.  But it wasn't particularly different than plain 'ole apple pie - so I'm not running back to try it quickly...!

Babka - Jewish
A yeast cake, traditionally baked for easter sunday - but also a staple pastry within Jewish culture.  Common flavors include chocolate or cinnamon, peppered with a fruit filling (such as raisins).

Would I try again? Oh baby, I had the chocolate, and the stuff was GOOD.  At least from Russ and Daughters (since I haven't tried it elsewhere.)  So...the answer is yes.  A definite yes.

Bowtie Pastry - Jewish

A crispy fried pastry (no filling), twisted into a neat bowtie shape and dusted with sugar.  Nice, light and sweet...but no real oomph or substance to it.  Okay, but nothing I feel a need to repeat.  (If anyone knows the actual name of this, let me know!)

Would I try again? No

Hamantoshin - Jewish

Little triangular pastries, with fruit filled centers (such as cherry or apricot.)  A common sight in any Jewish bakery...!

Would I try again? No.  The texture of the dough is too dry and crumbly for my taste.

Kichel - Jewish

Shaped like a pita, a flaky, crisp cookie with a shiny dust of sugar on top.  No fillings in this particular sweet...which leaves it light as air when it reaches the stomach.

Would I try again? Nah - not enough to it to try again!

Rugalach - Jewish
Small rolled pastries, filled with sweets such as chocolate, cinnamon, raisons, or nuts.  A little dry on the outside, but the fillings do hit the spot.

Would I try again? Yes.  Tasty.  (Not spectacular - but definitely tasty.)
