Desserts of the UK - England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales

Banoffee Pie - English
Dessert pie made from bananas, cream, and condensed milk, piled high on a crumbled biscuit-butter pastry shell.  Available in restaurants and the freezer section of the occasional grocery store, this is one heavy pie, similar to the richest of cheese cakes.

Would I try again?  Theoretically.  But it's pretty heavy, and--of course--non-vegan.  On the other hand, it's extremely tasty.  So check it out for yourself.

Bread and Butter Pudding - English
Slices of buttered bread baked in an oven with a coating of raisins, nutmeg, egg/milk cream and custard.  Similar in concept to French Toast or (perhaps) New Orleans bread pudding, this dessert really isn't all that striking.  The version I tried was somewhat bland, though the custard surrounding it was tasty.

Would I try again?  Nah.  It's really plain, especially compared to treacle pudding!

Chocolate Fondant - Scottish/English
Chocolate cream filling, made from a sugar/water mixture reduced to a creamy, thick mass.  VERY rich, like a decadent cheese cake.

Would I try again?  Very tasty.  Yes.

Clotted Cream and Scones - English
A thick, yellow butter made from unpasturized, heated cow's milk.  A standard nibble for afternoon tea, clotted cream is served as a spread over scones (along with tea and several crust-free finger sandwiches.)

Would I try again?  Well, since it's dairy and kind of heavy, no.  But I do have to admit it was tasty.

Cranachan - Scottish
A traditional dessert made from whip cream, honey and fresh raspberries (or cranberries), all piled over a base of toasted oatmeal.  Sort of like an English trifle, it's light, airy and refreshing.

Would I try again?  Yep....light and tasty, it's perfect for a summer day.

Crunchie Bar (Cadbury)  - UK in general
A popular candy bar, distinguished by it's honeycomb-toffee center, covered with a layer of milk chocolate.

Would I try again?  If I was the candy bar type, definitely.  This was one tasty bar!

Deep Fried Mars Bar (and Cadbury Creme Egg) - Scottish
Yes.  You read it right.  It's possible to buy a deep fried Mars Bar (and, around Easter, a deep fried Creme Egg.)  It's got fry batter, with a very warm chocolatey sensation inside.  According to rumor, these started in Scotland, and have recently become a semi-sensation in the States.  Okay, it's not Godiva chocolate, but it's still pretty warm n' tasty.  It's something everybody should try at least once, just to say they've done it!  And that comes from Ms. Healthy Food Nazi herself....

Would I try again?  Yes.  Terribly unhealthy, but worth it as an occasional treat!  3.1 stars!

Jelly Babies - English
Popular gelatin based candies shaped like cartoon baby dolls.  Similar to gummy bears, with a sweeter flavor and somewhat softer texture.

Would I try again?  Definitely - these guys beat gummy bears (and happen to be a favorite of Dr. Who!)

Spotted Dick - English
A traditional pudding made from suet (animal fat), butter and flour.  Studded with currants (hence the term "spotted"), it's usually served in a bath of custard.

Would I try again?  Nah.  It's okay (and great for a number of American jokes) - but it's nothing compared to Treacle pudding.

Sticky Toffee Pudding - English and Scottish
Sponge cake, covered with chopped dates and a layer of liquified toffee.  Yummy, though not quite as amazing as treacle pudding...

Would I try again?  Yes, pretty tasty.

Treacle Pudding - English
Steamed sponge cake, covered with a thick, deliciously sweet layer of syrup/molasses.  Like spotted dick, it's often served in a bowl of custard.  When done right, this dessert is to DIE FOR...spectacularly moist, and sweet, and just generally terrific!

Would I try again?  Absolutely awesome  - probably my favorite dish in London!  3.2 stars!

Trifles - English
A gelatin dessert, mixed with fruit, custard, sponge cake and whipped cream.  Like Scottish Cranachan, this stuff is light, airy and great for a sweet not-too-filling dessert.

Would I try again?  Yes - Tofutti whip cream, here I come...
