Almond Milk A non-dairy milk made from ground/filtered almonds*. Like soy milk, the commercial brands come in several augmented flavors - including vanilla and chocolate. The brand I tried (Almond Breeze) was rather nice - with a subtly nutty aftertaste. It doesn't pack the same flavor punch as soy milk (and specifically Soy Dream) - but it is nice, in a laid back sort of way. Would I try again? Yeah. I think I could get used to this stuff... Where I found it: Health Nut * Though less commercially available, milk is made from several other types of nuts, too...such as brazil. Tasty - especially at Jubbs Longevity. |

Rice Milk A non-dairy milk substitute, made from brown rice (available plain, and in flavors such as vanilla, chocolate or carob.) The brand I sampled was Rice Dream - which I found too watery and mild for my taste, running a distance third after soy and almond milk, respectively. Would I try again? No. Way too watery. Soy Milk (aka Dou Jiang in Chinese) Originally Chinese - now a popular beverage of the vegetarian/vegan/health set. Made from the liquid of crushed/filtered soy beans, it's a beverage which can be consumed warm or cold....and is now available in a million different flavors. One particularly tasty brand is Silk - which makes an extremely addictive chocolate version. Nutritionally, the beverage has its fans and detractors. Lovers of soy praise the vitamins and proteins - not to mention the lack of fat compared to cow milk. Others note the high level of phytoestrogens in the liquid, arguing that increased consumption of soy can cause thyroid problems, not to mention issues with Genetical Modified soybeans. As for me - I'll take the mid-road - consuming soymilk on occasion, but not as a staple. Just in case. Would I try again? If it's the Silk Chocolate variety! Where I found it: Any old grocery store |
